May 7, 2005:
Again... sunrise. This time we went to Sras Srong... the royal bathing pool where the sun came up red over the ... still and probably insect infested waters. We sat on a small platform with statues of serpents on either side of us. Meanwhile children scampered about wanting to sell us something, anything as we were a few of just a handful of tourists that bothered to come to Sras Srong and not Angkor Wat or some of the other TOP places to watch the sunrise. We sat, relaxed, still sleepy from our early morning wake-up calls. (you should see the picture on my three day visitor pass). Then we turned around and checked out the small temple of Banteay Kdei. Banteay Kdei is much like Ta Prohm, but worth a quick visit, since we were already there.

Journal Continued:
Then we headed off to our final temple... Banteay Srei. Banteay Srei is an adorable bite-size temple of red sandstone and hundreds of ornate carvings to shiva. "some of the finest carving seen anywhere on the planet," according to lonely planet. Baneay Srei (citadel of the women) was so named because the fine work must have been done by a woman as it was far too fine for the hands of a man. Begun in the late 900's the temple was commissioned by a brahman. Carvings include flowers, gods, women, and depictions of religious stories. There to make the entire experience that much more breathtaking, were a group of monks on "monks day out" in their fine saffron robes.
Journal Continued:
They were kind enough to make almost every one of my pictures of the sandstone carvings, that much more picturesque. Also nearby was a band of cambodian landmine victims playing special Cambodian music which wafted through the entire temple as we meandered through the small corridors. Later we sat outside to watch the band, and their young entertainer... a five yearold hoolahooper who could accept money without altering his "stride".

Journal Continued:
After our usual afternoon siesta, Josh and I hurried back to Angkor wat to sit and ... absorb before heading to the airport. Josh drew a sketch of the temple grounds while cambodians watched from behind... quiet as church mice... without him even knowing that they were there. I was in another section, watching them, watch him. It was very peaceful.

Finally, at the airport... was our last sunset at siem reap... and amazingly, the most beautiful by Far. One of nature's little jokes I guess. I just sat there waiting for our flight watching the brilliant shades of red, purple and blue along the horizon.
