Continued: Then we headed off to our final temple... Banteay Srei. Banteay Srei is an adorable bite-size temple of red sandstone and hundreds of ornate carvings to shiva. "some of the finest carving seen anywhere on the planet," according to lonely planet. Baneay Srei (citadel of the women) was so named because the fine work must have been done by a woman as it was far too fine for the hands of a man. Begun in the late 900's the temple was commissioned by a brahman. Carvings include flowers, gods, women, and depictions of religious stories. There to make the entire experience that much more breathtaking, were a group of monks on "monks day out" in their fine saffron robes. |

Continued: They were kind enough to make almost every one of my pictures of the sandstone carvings, that much more picturesque. Also nearby was a band of cambodian landmine victims playing special Cambodian music which wafted through the entire temple as we meandered through the small corridors. Later we sat outside to watch the band, and their young entertainer... a five yearold hoolahooper who could accept money without altering his "stride". |
