Sanchi

Not far from Bhopal, lies some of the oldest and most interesting Buddhist structures in India. The emperor Ashoka, a Buddhist convert, built the first stupas there in the 3rd century BC. Later, the site decayed and was later forgotten until in 1818 a British army officer rediscovered the site.
