Sakura Season: The Blossoms Start to Fade--> Previous --> Next --> Home --> More Adventures --> japan Index |
One of the most charming characteristics of hanami season is how everyone in Japan stops what they are doing for three-four days and spend it under the sakura blossoms. |
All along the path by the Imperial Palace moat people were scattered on little matts, with perfect little bento boxes. |
It is wonderful to see everyone, young, old, businessmen, gazing up dreamily at the pink and white flowers. Of course, on into the days... as the hours pass more and more blossoms fall and the trees start to look a little bare. |
Below: Rachel with a group of ladies out for the season. |

The terrace of elephants was so named as the entire structure has a series of bas-relief elephants parading around the circumference. They also have elephants at the corners, their trunks creating graceful columns to support the platform. From this platform long ago, Angkor's kings would hold its public ceremonies. |

Everywhere
you turn, it is like Tokyo was sprinkled with happy dust and everyone,
stops to stare at the flowers and smiles. And as soon as it started, it is over. Trees covered in clouds of blossoms, soon are empty and the ground below is white with fallen petals. |
