Figuig
Figuig is a charming collection of Ksour
(fortified villages) which surround five oases
in the center of the desert. This oasis is
measured by the number of Palm trees instead
of people.... this one is about 200,000 palms.

The women of Figuig were rarely seen
unless out on their errands. Unlike other
regions in Morocco, the women here
wore only white flowing veils... making them
appear truly ethereal.

In the fortified villages, all the walls were
made of mud and it created a maze of
internal streets with houses above and doors
on all sides. This kept marauding water
stealers from taking control.

There has been peace amongst the
villages for a hundred years, when they
established a water sharing agreement. Each
family can buy a forty minute water privelege which
they use to keep the plants in their personal
garden producing amazing fruits and
vegetables.
