January 7, 2005:
The drive from Queenstown was pleasant. We got up early in the morning and headed towards Wanaka where we had a 9am canyoning adventure. The drive was as usual beautful and amazing. Vistas of river valleys, lakes, mountains, rich plains, sheep of course, and much much more.

As usual, I had to stop on more than one occassion to take pictures and film a little. And I know I will be glad when I see a picture and am reminded what a great time I have had this year. Something to remind me of NZed travels.

When we pulled into the adorable town of Wanaka, we drove over the hill and looked out over the lake which sparkled in the sunshine. Thus far, we have had amazing weather. On the hike, it was perfectly cool, and pleasant with no rain. When we were on milford sound, I anticipated rain, and was surprised and happy to find crystal blue skies and sunshine. But to be honest, I didn't have time to get really irritated as minutes after my arrival we were set to depart for our canyoning. And fortunately, we found another place for the second night. So in the end, it worked out.

It began with suiting up. Thermals, wetsuit, protective jacket, wetsuit booties, tennis shoes, climbing harness-- you were set after that. Still the water was ice cold. You felt it when you hit the water. The first drop was scary... I was first in line... I slowly let myself abseil down into a 20 foot drop of water below me. I was very scared -- but the gear held

From where I stood, it looked like I was jumping into a plate sized puddle of water. Then it was my turn. I stood up and was terrified. I looked at josh... I looked down, I paused, I took a deep breath and jumped. About halfway down I got really scared. I thought I was going to hit the rock and I must have jerked because when I hit the water, I was butt first. I actually thought
