May 4, 2005:
The third day in Sapa, we did a short 10 Km hike to the village of ta Phin. This particular path had seldom seen visitors from Sapa, so we were as much of a site to the villagers and buffalo as they were to us. Again, more fields of rice, fields of corn, and many fields of hemp/marijuana. This is grown for the fiber, not the drug effect, so it is supposedly not "the good stuff". But still, it is amusing to see these old farmer women offering up pillow cases, woven shirts, and "maryanna" to passersby.

Journal Continued:
The night train back to hanoi was just as advertised. Comfortable, roomy, no bars on the windows, a bit more "fresh"air, and it left on time. SO, we got to Hanoi with plenty of time to show josh his two key sites: the ho chi minh mausoleum, and the army museum. He has about 150 pictures of fallen plans, tanks, antiaircraft guns, so on and so forth. Again, propaganda abounds in these places... there was a French helmet full of bullet holes from Dien bien phu (the site of the final victory of the viet minh armies over the French) and the caption read, "evidence of the French failure." Yes, they aren't always sensitive to tourists.

Left: a water powered rice grinder. The water fills the cup until it can't support the weight. Then it releases the water and falls back to the ground... grinding the rice. :
